Where were you during the Euro 2004 Final?
All Greeks remember exactly where we were and how we felt when the header by Angelos Charisteas brought the Euro 2004 silverware to Greece. Anxiety gave way to happiness, which turned into exuberant celebrations for what, at first, seemed impossible. Euro 2004 is one of the moments that have been recorded in our collective memory.
It was a day that is hard to forget, when underdog Greece beat Portugal 1-0 in the final. This legendary team, expected to bow out in the early group stages, went on to defeat three top-seeded teams on their way to their triumphant final win. Flag-draped Montrealers poured onto the streets, blocking major intersections. The streets were filled with horn-honking fans, thousands of people singing and dancing. It was a time that can only be described by Greek fans as a magical summer.
